Prepare yourself for an experience off the beaten path with this fantastic hike across the Usambara Mountains. Hike while taking in the breathtaking views, the lush greenery, the rain forests, the birdlife, the farming operations, the local culture, the villages, and the search for chameleons. Within four or three days, this journey will go roughly 60 kilometres. One of Tanzania’s undiscovered treasures is the Usambara Mountains. A hotspot for uncommon fauna like chameleons, spectacular cliffs and mountain ranges, a web of nearby villages, and a wealth of biodiversity. Lushoto town serves as the gateway to the highlands and it’s where you will start your hike, the common and rewarding trek is the 4 days Lushoto to Mtae trail. The Lushoto to Mtae hike is a beautiful and challenging trek through the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. The hike takes about 3-4 days and covers a distance of about 60 kilometers more or less depending on the your trail selection. The trail winds through forests, farmlands, and villages, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

ITINERARY

Day 1

Arrive in Lushoto

You will arrive in the afternoon to Lushoto on your arrival you will meet our guide who will help you get your Luggage and check in to a booked hotel, possibly have your lunch. After Lunch you will relax into your room for sometimes waiting for the time to Walk for the sunset at Irente view point or Java Viewpoint, in the late evening you will start walking via Lushoto township to Yoghoi village passing through various villages and saying hello to local people and the kids on the way you will use almost 2 hrs on arrival to Irente village you will start ascending up to the peak you will enjoy the beautiful weather and view the Masai plain and sisal plantations from 1000m a.s.l. keep enjoying the breezing winds and panoramic views, while waiting for the sunset around 6:30pm. After sunsets descend down to the village and get your transport and drive back to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 2

Lushoto to Lukozi through Magamba Forest

After breakfast, start your hike from lushoto to Lukozi village, From Lushoto, travel via Kwembago village to the Magamba Nature Forest. You will get knowledge of the wasambaa tribe’s culture, way of life, and natural plants along the route. Explore the Magamba rain forest while observing the diverse wildlife, colorful birds, and vibrant butterflies. Attempt to spot colobus monkeys, though this is not a guarantee. Pay a visit to a historical cave in the forest that was built by Germany during its colonial rule in Tanganyika and is thought to have been used during the First World War.

Continue your journey to Kigulu hakwewas Peak, which is 1840 meters above sea level and situated in the center of a magamba forest. From the peak, you may enjoy views of the town of Lushoto and the Usambara rolling hills. Following a little period of relaxation at the summit, you will continue trekking through a pine plantation to the Magamba Eco-village, where you will meet the local mamas who will prepare you a nice meal. Following a traditional lunch, you will engage in a coffee adventure that includes discovering a farm, roasting beans, and obtaining fine powder, which you will then use to prepare a cup of coffee. If you’re interested, enter a nearby tavern and try a sugarcane-based local brewery, then carry on to Lukozi village. Spend the night at the Malindi Village Guest House or at the Bush Baby Homestay.

Day 3

Lukozi to Rangwi through Mgwashi Village

In the morning after breakfast you will start walking in the direction of Rangwi village, the hike distance today is approximately 15 km with an incline of 750m. This journey will take you through the villages on pleasant trails, past farming fields where you’ll learn about the local farming practices, and onward while you take in the lovely views of the villages and mountain peaks. During the journey, hike uphill off-the-beaten-paths to reach 2000m high and take in the scenery. Rest up before your picnic lunch.

The walk will continue through villages and agricultural fields after lunch in order to reach the village of Rangwi. After lunch, you’ll check into your room and unwind before going out for a late-afternoon stroll through Rangwi and Emao to see local customs. You’ll then return to your room for supper and the night. Spend the night at the sisters’ convent in the village.

Day 4

Rangwi to Mtae through Sunga and Mambo Village

Once more, after breakfast, the journey will begin. Leave the Sisters convent and go toward Mambo village. This trip will give you a variety of experiences as you pass through communities, mountain peaks, and some forest areas. The tour will begin with a climb uphill to a viewpoint where you will be rewarded with a lovely view of the surrounding communities and countryside. Take a quick break before continuing through the pine forest to the village of Sunga, where you may enjoy local culture and stop for lunch with a local family.

Following lunch, you can check out a pottery project run by women and discover the process of making pots out of clay soil, you will also stroll to Mtae in the afternoon to take in the picturesque scenery of the settlements on the Usambara Mountains’ rolling hills. Spend the night at the Magumba View Cottages, which are located at 1900 meters and provide a pleasant, relaxing view from which, on a clear day, you can see Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day 5

Mtae village back to Lushoto Town

You will take a private vehicle in the morning and travel to Lushoto town, where you will board a bus to Dar, Tanga, Arusha, Moshi or elsewhere.
