Destination Overview

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is Uganda’s only home to wild rhinos, offering visitors a unique opportunity to track southern white rhinos on foot in their natural habitat. Located in Nakasongola District, about 170 kilometers (three hours’ drive) north of Kampala, the sanctuary sits along the main route to Murchison Falls National Park.

Established in 2005, Ziwa was created through a partnership between Rhino Fund Uganda and the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) to reintroduce rhinos into Uganda after their extinction in the 1980s due to poaching and civil conflict. The sanctuary initially started with six rhinos four donated by Disney’s Animal Kingdom (USA) and Kenya, while two were born in captivity at Solio Ranch, Kenya. Since then, conservation efforts have led to successful breeding, steadily increasing the white rhino population in Uganda.

Beyond rhino tracking, Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary has expanded its biodiversity by introducing giraffes and hartebeests from Murchison Falls National Park. The sanctuary also hosts over 350 bird species, making it an excellent destination for birdwatching, nature walks, and guided wildlife experiences.

A visit to Ziwa is an essential stop for anyone exploring Uganda’s Big Five safari circuit, offering an up-close and personal encounter with one of Africa’s most endangered species.

Other wildlife

In addition to the renowned rhinos, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a rich haven for wildlife, home to over 40 species of mammals and 300 bird species.

Among the diverse mammals found here are Mongoose, Vervet monkeys, various antelopes such as Oribis, Kobs, Waterbucks, Bushbucks, Reedbucks, and Grey Duikers. The sanctuary also hosts Black and White Colobus monkeys, Hartebeests, Hippos, Leopards, and Ground Squirrels.

For reptile enthusiasts, the sanctuary is home to large Monitor Lizards and Crocodiles, adding to the impressive biodiversity of this protected area. Whether you’re a wildlife lover or an avid birdwatcher, the sanctuary offers an unforgettable experience with its abundant wildlife.

History of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary and Uganda’s Rhino Conservation

In the 1970s, Uganda faced significant political instability that led to widespread poaching, decimating the country’s wildlife populations, including rhinos and elephants. The last rhino was tragically poached from Uganda’s wilderness in 1982, and it wasn’t until 2005 that efforts to reintroduce these majestic creatures began. With careful conservation efforts, rhinos were reintroduced into Uganda, with plans to eventually release them back into national parks, providing a second chance for their survival.

For those seeking a true “Big Five” experience in Uganda, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary stands out as the only destination where tourists can encounter rhinos in their natural habitat. Rhinos, the second-largest land mammals after elephants, are named from the Greek words rhinos meaning nose and ceros meaning horn, reflecting their most striking feature.

There are five distinct species of rhinos worldwide, two of which can be found in Africa: the Black and White Rhinos. Both species are characterized by their pair of horns and are predominantly found in East and Southern Africa. The other three species are native to Asia, including the Indian Rhino, also known as the Great One-Horned Rhinoceros, which is mainly found in specific regions of India and Nepal.

Additionally, the Javan Rhino, with its single horn, is found in Indonesia and Vietnam, while the Sumatran Rhino, also a two-horned species, can be spotted in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Embarking on a rhino trek at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers one of Uganda’s most thrilling and unforgettable wildlife experiences. In 2011, South Africa’s Northwest Parks and Tourism Board generously donated six female rhinos to the sanctuary, and since then, Uganda has proudly become home to over 20 rhinos. The first rhinos to be reintroduced were four from Kenya, followed by two from the United States.

These magnificent creatures are closely monitored by Rhino Fund Uganda’s well-trained rangers, who ensure their safety and gather crucial data for ongoing conservation efforts. Beyond rhinos, the sanctuary is a haven for other wildlife, including 26 mammal species. The woodlands and thickets shelter animals such as Uganda Kobs, Bushbucks, Pangolins, Reedbucks, and Vervet Monkeys, while the swamps are home to Hippos, Crocodiles, and various water species.

The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers a unique opportunity to witness the rebirth of rhino populations in Uganda and experience a rich diversity of wildlife in a pristine environment.

Best time to visit

The optimal time to visit Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is during the dry season, from December to February and again from late June to October. This period offers the best wildlife viewing, as animals are naturally drawn to watering holes, making them easier to spot. The dry weather ensures minimal disruption to your outdoor activities, a key factor considering most of the sanctuary’s attractions are outdoor-based.

For birdwatching enthusiasts, the wetter months from March to May and September to November offer a unique experience. During this time, the reserve comes alive with lush greenery, creating an ideal setting for birdwatching as many species thrive in the vibrant landscape.
