Experiences

Things to do in Uganda

Go Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

One of the top experiences in Uganda is mountain gorilla trekking (also called gorilla tracking) in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, which is home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas.

These incredible creatures are found in the Virunga Mountains, with populations residing in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, as well as Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Gorilla trekking is rated as one of the best wildlife experiences by many travelers. The bond formed with these gentle giants is something words can’t fully capture.

With gorilla trekking permits in Rwanda now priced significantly higher than in Uganda (currently double the cost), and the situation in the DRC being less stable, gorilla permits in Uganda are in high demand. To secure your preferred dates and location, it’s best to book at least 6 months to a year in advance. Don’t wait plan ahead to ensure you don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

Experience Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Chimpanzee trekking is one of Uganda’s top wildlife experiences, offering an up-close encounter with our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.

Whether you choose chimpanzee tracking (a one-hour experience) or chimpanzee habituation (a full-day adventure), this activity is a must-do for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.

Where to Go Chimpanzee Trekking in Uganda

Uganda is home to several prime locations for chimpanzee trekking, including:

Kibale Forest National Park – Known as the primate capital of the world, with the highest density of chimpanzees in Uganda.
Budongo Forest (Murchison Falls National Park) – A top destination for both chimp tracking and seasonal habituation experiences.
Kyambura Gorge (Queen Elizabeth National Park) – A stunning, forested gorge offering a unique trekking experience.

Opting for a full-day habituation experience increases the chances of witnessing natural behaviors, such as foraging, grooming, and playing. Since chimps often remain in the trees, spending more time in the forest improves the likelihood of spotting them on the ground, making it a fantastic photography opportunity.

The dry seasons (June to September & December to February) provide the best conditions for trekking, with easier trails and improved visibility.

For an unforgettable Uganda safari experience, don’t miss the chance to track or habituate chimpanzees in the country’s lush forests. Book your permit early, as spaces are limited!

Spot the Rare Tree-climbing Lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park

One of the most unique wildlife experiences in Uganda is witnessing the tree-climbing lions of Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Unlike most lions, which prefer resting on the ground, these majestic big cats have developed the unusual habit of lounging in trees, creating an incredible sight for safari-goers.

Why Do These Lions Climb Trees?

While the exact reason remains debated, some theories suggest that tree-climbing lions:

Escape the heat – Trees provide shade and cool breezes, offering a comfortable resting place.
Avoid biting insects – Staying off the ground helps them escape tsetse flies and other pests.
Get a better vantage point – From the treetops, they can survey their surroundings and spot potential prey.

Dry Season (June to September & December to February) – Easier game viewing as animals gather around water sources.

Morning and Late Afternoon Game Drives – Lions are more active and easier to spot during cooler hours.

Conquer the Rwenzori Mountains

For adventure seekers, hiking the Rwenzori Mountains is one of the most rewarding experiences in Uganda.

Straddling the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to Mount Stanley, Uganda’s highest peak, standing at 5,109 meters, the third tallest mountain in Africa.

Trekking Options in the Rwenzori Mountains

Whether you’re looking for a short day hike or a multi-day trekking adventure, the Rwenzori Mountains offer diverse hiking trails suited for all levels.

However, for those aiming to reach Margherita Peak, the summit of Mount Stanley, expect an 8 to 9-day challenging expedition through breathtaking landscapes.

Diverse Ecosystems – From lush rainforests to alpine meadows and glacier-covered peaks, the scenery is truly magical.
Unique Wildlife – Spot Rwenzori three-horned chameleons, forest elephants, and rare birds.

Remote and Untouched – Unlike Mount Kilimanjaro, the Rwenzoris offer a less crowded trekking experience for those seeking true wilderness.

Dry Seasons (June–August & December–February) – Ideal for clearer trails and better weather conditions.
Wet Seasons (March–May & September–November) – More challenging due to slippery paths but offers dramatic landscapes.

For an unforgettable Uganda trekking experience, take on the challenge of hiking the Rwenzori Mountains and witness the surreal beauty of the Mountains of the Moon!
