The largest strip of surviving montane forest in Central or East Africa is found in Nyungwe Forest National Park, a massive tropical rainforest. Along with over 25% of all primates in Africa, it is home to numerous bird, butterfly, and orchid species.
Nyungwe’s heart resembles a scene from a fairy tale. While you silently follow the sounds of primates, you are surrounded by towering ancient mahogany and ebony trees, beautiful orchids that cling to every branch, and vibrant birds and butterflies.
Nyungwe National Park is not only one of Africa’s oldest rainforests but also the largest forested expanse in Rwanda, covering an impressive 1,019 km² of diverse landscapes, including dense Afromontane forests, bamboo-clad slopes, grasslands, and wetlands.
This exceptional ecosystem serves as a vital source of water, feeding two of the world’s largest rivers, the Congo and the Nile, and plays a crucial role in providing fresh water to Rwanda.
The park boasts a remarkable biodiversity, with over 1,100 plant species, 345 bird species, and 85 mammal species, including 13 primate species such as the chimpanzee, Ruwenzori black-and-white colobus, and L’Hoest’s monkeys.
Historically, Nyungwe’s rich fauna and flora were under threat from rampant poaching, illegal mining, unsustainable resource harvesting, and agricultural encroachment, all of which endangered its diverse ecosystem.
However, in 2020, a major turning point came when African Parks, following a successful partnership in Akagera National Park, entered into a 20-year agreement with the Rwandan government to manage Nyungwe.
This partnership is focused on restoring and protecting the park’s biodiversity, involving local communities, and developing sustainable tourism to enhance the park’s economic viability.
Today, Nyungwe is not only recovering ecologically but also fostering a sense of conservation ownership among local communities, helping to ensure a healthy and financially self-sustaining future for the park.
Nyungwe National Park is home to an impressive 86 mammal species, though many are elusive and seldom seen by visitors. The park’s main attraction, however, lies in its diverse and captivating primates, with chimpanzees standing out as the star species.
In addition to these intelligent and social creatures, Nyungwe boasts an incredible variety of other primate species. Among them are the olive baboon, L’Hoest’s monkey, grey-cheeked mangabey, Ruwenzori colobus, blue monkey, and the fascinating owl-faced monkey.
These primates add a magical dimension to Nyungwe’s already rich biodiversity, making it a must-visit destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
Nyungwe National Park is a paradise for birding enthusiasts, offering a mesmerizing range of species for both casual birdwatchers and serious ornithologists. As colorful birds flutter through the park’s dense forest, even casual birders will be captivated by the vibrant array of species. However, for those keen to tick off new species from their list, Nyungwe provides an extraordinary opportunity to spot a wealth of rare and endemic birds.
It’s highly recommended to enlist the help of a specialist birding guide from the park’s headquarters, as their knowledge of bird calls can lead to the discovery of hidden gems. Among the highlights are the Albertine Rift endemics, which include the elusive Albertine owlet, the vibrant red-collared babbler, and the striking Rockefeller’s sunbird—three species found nowhere else on the eastern side of the Albertine Rift. For bird lovers, Nyungwe is truly an unmissable destination.

Organizing a safari in Rwanda Destination, can be overwhelming due to the many choices available for transport, accommodation, and activities.
Chimpanzee Tracking
Nyungwe is the best place to track chimpanzees in Rwanda, with approximately 400 chimpanzees living in different clans. Two groups are habituated for tracking in the Uwinka and Cyamudongo sections of the park.
The tracking experience is thrilling and requires visitors to follow these highly mobile primates, often off-trail, into the dense forest. Once you spot them, you’ll get a chance to observe their fascinating behaviors such as feeding, grooming, and socializing.
What to Bring: Long-sleeve shirts, pants, hiking boots, a hat, rain jacket, walking stick, binoculars, and water. A porter is recommended for carrying extra luggage.
Chimpanzee Tracking Permit: $100
Park Entrance Fee: $100
Age Limit: 15 years and above.
Monkey Tracking
Nyungwe is a haven for primate lovers, with various species of monkeys roaming the forest. Besides chimpanzees, you can track other primates like the Ruwenzori Colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, Olive baboons, and Vervet monkeys, among others.
Some trails provide better opportunities to spot these monkeys, such as the Waterfall Trail (ideal for Colobus Monkeys) and the Kamiranzovu Trail (which crosses marshes and orchids).
Forest and Canopy Walks
One of the most unique experiences in Nyungwe is the Canopy Walk, which is the only one of its kind in Rwanda and the best in East Africa. The walk takes you 45 meters above the ground along a hanging platform, offering stunning views of the rainforest, wildlife, and birds.
If you have a fear of heights, you can opt for Forest Walks, where you can explore the forest floor and enjoy the biodiversity through various trails, some of which can take several hours to complete.
Birding Walks
Nyungwe is a premier birding destination, with over 300 bird species recorded, including 27 Albertine Rift endemics. Notable species include the Rwenzori Turaco, Blue Turaco, Chapins Flycatcher, and Archer’s Robin Chat.
Birdwatchers can enjoy guided walks through the forest, where they will have the chance to spot rare and beautiful species while learning about the park’s rich birdlife.
Biking the Congo Nile Trail
For an adventurous way to explore Nyungwe, consider biking along the Congo Nile Trail, which passes through the park. This 227 km trail offers a unique perspective of the forest, and you can cycle through diverse landscapes, encountering wildlife, plant species, and scenic views.
Camping along the trail is an essential part of the experience, so make sure to bring the right gear and supplies.

EXCELLENT Based on 271 reviews Crystel E2025-07-21Verified 7-day then two-day safari near Lake Natron Our safari went crescendo: Taranguire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and finally the superb Serengeti (4 days). Luck was with us, especially in the immense plains of the Serengeti: leopards, deer, cheetahs, families of lions and elephants, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, sumptuous birds, hyenas, and I pass...a wonder! Magic! Our young Francophone guide, Samuel, shared his many knowledge with us with immense enthusiasm and was absolutely adorable with our two children, ages 7 and 9; Osman, our driver, did everything to please us and took us to see the impressive wildebeest migration. As for our very smiling cook, Clemens, he regaled us with his delicious dishes. At the end of our Tanzanian stay, we spent two days in the incredible landscapes of Lake Natron and sacred Lengai Mountain. What to end the stay in style near the Maasai populations!
