Destination Overview

Mkomazi National Park is a breathtaking destination located in the northern part of Tanzania, nestled between the Kilimanjaro and Tanga Regions. The park shares its northern border with Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, creating a truly unique and vast wildlife corridor. Situated just 120 kilometers east of Moshi town, Mkomazi lies within the Mkomazi-Tsavo Ecosystem, one of the largest trans-boundary ecosystems in East Africa, second only to the renowned Serengeti-Mara Ecosystem.

This stunning park is a sanctuary for rare wildlife, including the fascinating Colobus monkeys, which thrive along the Umba River’s riverine forests. Mkomazi’s semi-arid climate and distinct bimodal rainfall pattern contribute to its diverse landscapes, from the scrublands dotted with baobab trees to the savannah forests with umbrella acacias.

Mkomazi is home to over 18 mammal species, including members of the Big Five, making it an essential wildlife haven. Additionally, the park is a paradise for birdwatchers, with over 450 species recorded within its boundaries. As part of the southern extension of the “Sahel” habitat, Mkomazi offers a rare and captivating environment with its Acacia-Commiphora species, further enhancing the park’s ecological richness.

Beyond its impressive biodiversity, Mkomazi offers some of the most spectacular views in Tanzania. The mighty Mount Kilimanjaro stands to the northwest, while the Pare and Usambara mountains provide a dramatic backdrop to the south. The park’s proximity to Tsavo National Park in Kenya makes it a vital corridor for migrating herds of elephants, zebras, and oryx.

Mkomazi is also a key refuge for two critically endangered species: the majestic black rhino and the sociable African wild dog. Together with Tsavo, Mkomazi forms one of the most important protected ecosystems on the planet, ensuring the survival of these remarkable animals.

Whether you’re seeking an unforgettable safari experience or simply want to immerse yourself in one of the most pristine and remote wilderness areas in East Africa, Mkomazi National Park promises an adventure like no other. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore this incredible park, where wildlife thrives in a stunning, unspoiled environment. Plan your visit today and be part of preserving this vital sanctuary.
