However, since chimpanzees have their own minds, the duration of the trek can vary, and every trek is unique.

Once you do find the chimps, you’re allowed an hour with them a brief but unforgettable encounter. Dry Season (May to October)

November to April: Temperatures stay similar to the dry season but can feel hotter due to increased humidity. Rain is typically in the form of afternoon thunderstorms, and although it may rain on most days, it rarely lasts all day. These months can be humid and warm, especially in the January to March period.

GETTING TO MAHALE MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK

There are several ways to reach Mahale Mountains National Park, depending on your preferences for road, water, or air travel

By Road

The distance from Kigoma town to Mahale Mountains National Park is approximately 220 kilometers.

The road journey offers scenic views, though it can be long and rugged.

By Water

If you’re looking for a unique travel experience, you can take a boat ride from Kigoma town across Lake Tanganyika. The MV Liemba, a historic passenger ferry, is one option.

Alternatively, you can take a boat from Kigoma to Lagosa Point and then catch a short 30-minute boat cruise to the park entrance. You can also access the park from Rukoma or Mgambo village, where local boats can be hired, or you can arrange for a park-provided boat pick-up.

By Air

For a quicker and more convenient option, you can fly directly to Mahale. Chartered flights are available from airlines such as Zantas Air, Coastal Aviation, Air Excel, and Safari Air Link.

These flights will take you to Mahale Airstrip, which is located about 5 kilometers from the park headquarters.
