Lake Kivu, one of several enormous freshwater lakes that line Africa’s Great Rift Valley, encloses Rwanda’s western region. The true delight of the Lake Kivu region is traveling between its villages; the road zigzags through the stunning hills and mountains that border the lake, softly twisting back and forth. It is regarded as a hidden treasure among Rwanda’s tourist attractions. It’s a great choice if you want to go slowly between Volcanoes National Park and Nyungwe Forest, pausing along the way to take in the spotless beaches and warm, secure bathing waters of Lake Kivu.
Lake Kivu, nestled between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, offers a serene escape amidst the Land of a Thousand Hills. While Rwanda doesn’t boast a coastline like Kenya or Zanzibar, Lake Kivu provides an idyllic retreat for those seeking relaxation and adventure.
As one of Africa’s Great Lakes, it’s a perfect stop between the gorillas of Volcanoes National Park and the chimpanzees of Nyungwe Forest National Park.
This stunning freshwater lake, with its tranquil waters, attracts both locals and tourists. Visitors can enjoy kayaking, boat tours, and cultural experiences, while basking in the peace of this picturesque destination. Lake Kivu is surrounded by majestic mountains, making it an enchanting backdrop for relaxation, with resorts, five-star hotels, and budget-friendly accommodations dotting its shores.
The lake is Africa’s deepest freshwater body, with an average depth of 240 meters (787 feet) and a maximum depth of 480 meters (1,575 feet). It spans 89 kilometers (55 miles) in length and 48 kilometers (30 miles) in width, covering a surface area of 2,700 square kilometers (1,040 square miles). At 1,460 meters (4,790 feet) above sea level, Lake Kivu sits on a rift valley floor that contributes to its remarkable depth, ranking fifteenth in the world.
Surrounding the lake are beautiful beaches, peninsulas, and islands, such as Idjwi and Goma in the Congo, forming an archipelago. Lake Kivu is also home to the world’s tenth-largest inland island. Historically, the lake has witnessed significant events, including the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, during which many victims were tragically dumped into the waters.
In recent years, Lake Kivu has become a source of economic interest due to the discovery of vast methane gas reserves beneath its surface. At a depth of 300 meters (1,000 feet), the lake contains around 55 billion cubic meters of dissolved methane gas. While small-scale extraction has been underway since 2004, the gas has been harnessed for energy purposes, including fueling a brewery in Gisenyi.
Whether you’re looking to explore its natural beauty, unwind by the lake, or delve into its intriguing history, Lake Kivu offers a unique and enriching experience that seamlessly combines relaxation and adventure.

EXCELLENT Based on 271 reviews Crystel E2025-07-21Verified 7-day then two-day safari near Lake Natron Our safari went crescendo: Taranguire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and finally the superb Serengeti (4 days). Luck was with us, especially in the immense plains of the Serengeti: leopards, deer, cheetahs, families of lions and elephants, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, sumptuous birds, hyenas, and I pass...a wonder! Magic! Our young Francophone guide, Samuel, shared his many knowledge with us with immense enthusiasm and was absolutely adorable with our two children, ages 7 and 9; Osman, our driver, did everything to please us and took us to see the impressive wildebeest migration. As for our very smiling cook, Clemens, he regaled us with his delicious dishes. At the end of our Tanzanian stay, we spent two days in the incredible landscapes of Lake Natron and sacred Lengai Mountain. What to end the stay in style near the Maasai populations!
