Mountain gorillas live in the wild, with each group led by a dominant silverback. Estimating the exact number of mountain gorillas can be challenging, but it’s believed that by 2016, the population in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo exceeded 1,000 individuals. Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest alone is home to about half of the global mountain gorilla population.

In Uganda, mountain gorillas can be found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi is home to over 500 gorillas spread across more than 35 groups, while Mgahinga hosts around 80 gorillas. While some of these gorilla families are habituated and open to tourists, many groups remain wild and are not accessible to visitors.

For a more intimate wildlife experience, visitors can track the habituated gorilla families in Bwindi and Mgahinga, where the gorillas are accustomed to human presence, offering a rare and unforgettable safari experience.

Gorilla Groups and the Habituation Process

Gorilla habituation is the gradual process of familiarizing gorillas with human presence. This essential procedure, which takes about two years, allows gorillas to become comfortable with humans observing their natural behaviors without disturbing their daily routines in the wild.

The gorilla habituation experience is one of the most popular activities for primate enthusiasts visiting Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. During this unique experience, trekkers have the opportunity to observe these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

In Uganda, there are 12 habituated gorilla families available for tracking, with a maximum of 8 visitors allowed to track each family per day. This ensures a more intimate, respectful interaction with the gorillas, minimizing human impact while maximizing the experience.
