Originally gazetted in 1934, Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s oldest national parks, spanning around 1,120 square kilometers (432 square miles).
The park went through a difficult time in the late 1990s when poaching and cattle grazing damaged its ecosystems as a result of Rwanda’s civil conflict.
African Parks, a non-governmental conservation organization, is currently in charge of managing Akagera, and their collaboration has greatly improved the park’s animal populations.
Akagera National Park is making great strides toward restoration because to a number of anti-poaching initiatives and the reintroduction of lions and rhinos.
The largest protected wetlands in central and eastern Africa are found in Akagera, which is a stunning combination of low-lying grasslands and savannah plains, rolling hills and valleys, and a number of lakes, marshes, and papyrus swamps. Akagera is a highly beautiful park because of its incredibly varied range of habitats.
The typical plains animals, such as impala, topi, eland, giraffe, waterbuck, sable, roan, and zebra, are likely to be seen when traveling to Rwanda and on a safari in Akagera. On game drives, it’s also typical to see buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, and hippo. Additionally, Akagera is home to the Big 5 because of the successful reintroduction of rhino and lion. Leopards are there, but they are a little harder to see due to their skill in camouflage and stealth.
A safari in Akagera would appeal to you if you are an avid birdwatcher. With over 480 species, it’s a birdwatcher’s dream come true! There are many endemic species, such as the red-faced barbet, and raptors and savannah birds are prevalent. Boat rides in the lakes of Akagera also offer a wealth of waterbirds, including crowned cranes, cormorants, herons, open-billed storks, and African fish eagles. And if you are extremely fortunate, you may even catch a glimpse of the unusual and ancient-looking shoebill, sometimes referred to as “whalehead.”
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s premier savanna destination, offering an unforgettable wildlife experience. Whether you’re embarking on thrilling game drives or enjoying serene boat rides on the park’s waterways, Akagera provides a chance to observe a diverse range of large mammals and an impressive array of birdlife, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.
The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including iconic African species such as elephants, lions, buffaloes, and hyenas. Visitors will also encounter zebras, giraffes, and several species of antelopes like bushbucks, roan antelopes, topis, and impalas.
The park’s diverse ecosystem is further enriched by primates like olive baboons, vervet monkeys, and nocturnal bush babies. The waters of Lake Ihema are a sanctuary for hippos and crocodiles, best viewed from the comfort of a boat ride.
Akagera is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to over 520 bird species. The park offers a stunning variety of water birds, savannah species, and forest birds, as well as migratory species. Among the park’s unique avian residents are the rare papyrus gonolek, found in the papyrus swamps, and the elusive shoebill stork.
Also notable are the red-faced barbets, swamp flycatchers, and fish eagles. Other common sightings include the grey-backed fiscals, cattle egrets, sacred ibis, and augur buzzards. Whether you’re an avid birder or a casual nature lover, Akagera’s diverse birdlife promises an enriching experience.

Organizing a safari in Rwanda Destination, can be overwhelming due to the many choices available for transport, accommodation, and activities.

The park’s boat rides on Lake Ihema provide the perfect opportunity to observe a variety of water birds, including the rare shoebill stork, fish eagles, and grey-backed fiscals.
Spot Fishing at Lake Shakani
Akagera National Park is home to Lake Shakani, Rwanda’s only destination for spot fishing. This unique activity allows you to cast a line along the serene shores, surrounded by the sounds of hippos and water birds.
Fishing in Akagera offers a rare opportunity to connect with the African wilderness while enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the lake.
Boat Safaris on Lake Ihema
A boat safari on Lake Ihema is the highlight of any visit to Akagera National Park. As the largest lake in the park, located in the southern region, it’s renowned for its concentration of hippos and crocodiles along the shores.
On a boat ride, you can get up close to these incredible creatures and observe them in their natural habitat.
Reaching Akagera National Park from Kigali is a straightforward and scenic journey. The park is located approximately 108 kilometers from Rwanda’s capital, and there are two convenient options for getting there: by road or flight.
By road, the journey takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes from Kigali. You’ll pass through the town of Rwamagana before arriving at the southern gate of the park. The northern gate is currently used for exit only, so your main access point will be the southern entrance.
For those who prefer a quicker route or want to avoid the drive, Akagera Aviation offers short flights into the park, making it an ideal choice for those looking to save time while enjoying a bird’s-eye view of Rwanda’s breathtaking landscapes.

EXCELLENT Based on 271 reviews Crystel E2025-07-21Verified 7-day then two-day safari near Lake Natron Our safari went crescendo: Taranguire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and finally the superb Serengeti (4 days). Luck was with us, especially in the immense plains of the Serengeti: leopards, deer, cheetahs, families of lions and elephants, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, sumptuous birds, hyenas, and I pass...a wonder! Magic! Our young Francophone guide, Samuel, shared his many knowledge with us with immense enthusiasm and was absolutely adorable with our two children, ages 7 and 9; Osman, our driver, did everything to please us and took us to see the impressive wildebeest migration. As for our very smiling cook, Clemens, he regaled us with his delicious dishes. At the end of our Tanzanian stay, we spent two days in the incredible landscapes of Lake Natron and sacred Lengai Mountain. What to end the stay in style near the Maasai populations!
