Destination Overview

Originally gazetted in 1934, Akagera National Park is one of Africa’s oldest national parks, spanning around 1,120 square kilometers (432 square miles).

The park went through a difficult time in the late 1990s when poaching and cattle grazing damaged its ecosystems as a result of Rwanda’s civil conflict.

African Parks, a non-governmental conservation organization, is currently in charge of managing Akagera, and their collaboration has greatly improved the park’s animal populations.

Akagera National Park is making great strides toward restoration because to a number of anti-poaching initiatives and the reintroduction of lions and rhinos.

The largest protected wetlands in central and eastern Africa are found in Akagera, which is a stunning combination of low-lying grasslands and savannah plains, rolling hills and valleys, and a number of lakes, marshes, and papyrus swamps. Akagera is a highly beautiful park because of its incredibly varied range of habitats.

The typical plains animals, such as impala, topi, eland, giraffe, waterbuck, sable, roan, and zebra, are likely to be seen when traveling to Rwanda and on a safari in Akagera. On game drives, it’s also typical to see buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, and hippo. Additionally, Akagera is home to the Big 5 because of the successful reintroduction of rhino and lion. Leopards are there, but they are a little harder to see due to their skill in camouflage and stealth.

There are many endemic species, such as the red-faced barbet, and raptors and savannah birds are prevalent. And if you are extremely fortunate, you may even catch a glimpse of the unusual and ancient-looking shoebill, sometimes referred to as “whalehead.”

By road, the journey takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes from Kigali. You’ll pass through the town of Rwamagana before arriving at the southern gate of the park. The northern gate is currently used for exit only, so your main access point will be the southern entrance.
