Mount Hanang is an incredible peak located in Tanzania’s Manyara region, standing at 3,418 meters, making it the third highest mountain in the country after Kilimanjaro and Meru. The mountain forms part of the Mount Hanang Nature Forest Reserve, a diverse and rich landscape that includes everything from steep slopes to lush evergreen forests, ridges, valleys, and moorlands.
This extinct volcano, nestled in the eastern arm of the Great Rift Valley, offers a unique array of vegetation types, including montane forests, thicket, grasslands, and heath. The reserve is not just a botanical wonder but also a vital water source, supplying several rivers and seasonal streams to the surrounding Hanang district and Katesh. Lake Basotugang and Lake Gendabi, which are soda lakes, also lie within the reserve.
Mount Hanang is a culturally significant site for the local Barbaig and Iraqw communities. The mountain is considered sacred by the indigenous people, and the area is central to their spiritual practices. The reserve is also home to diverse wildlife, including bushbucks, duikers, vervet monkeys, klipspringers, and the occasional hyena or snake. Bird watchers will find plenty to explore, with numerous bird species inhabiting the area.
A hike here offers a different experience compared to the typical Tanzanian treks, with the chance to explore not just nature but also local culture and spirituality.

Mount Hanang Nature Forest Reserve is truly a remarkable and diverse destination. From its rich biodiversity, including elephants and a variety of bird species, to its cultural significance for the Barabaig and Iraqw peoples, it offers an exceptional mix of natural beauty and heritage.
The sacred sites, soda lakes, and underground freshwater lakes like Basotu only add to its allure. It’s definitely one of those spots that remain under the radar for many, making it a hidden gem in Tanzania! Would you like to dive deeper into specific aspects of the reserve?
Towering above the rural town of Katesh in northern Tanzania, Mount Hanang is a formidable 3,423-meter challenge that rewards intrepid hikers with jaw-dropping views of the Great Rift Valley and beyond.
This 17.5-kilometer out-and-back trek blends steep ascents, rugged terrain, and high-altitude camping under starlit skies, a true test of endurance for seasoned adventurers.
Distance: 17.5km round trip
Duration: 8–10 hours total (5–6 hours ascent, 3 hours descent)
Elevation Gain: 1,791 meters
Summit Height: 3,423 meters
Difficulty: Strenuous, extreme incline, rocky terrain, high altitude
Mount Hanang’s brutal incline forces hikers to climb 1,600 meters over just 8.5km, a relentless grind of loose boulders, scree slopes, and narrow trails. The thin air at 3,423 meters amplifies fatigue, while rocky sections demand constant focus to avoid slips.
While there are no sheer cliffs, the terrain’s unpredictability and high-altitude conditions (including chilly nights for summit campers) make this a hike for the physically and mentally prepared.
Starting in Katesh, the trail ascends swiftly through dusty foothills before transitioning to rocky scrambles and exposed ridges. Many opt for an overnight summit camp departing at 11 AM allows time to reach the peak by late afternoon for sunset vistas, followed by a chilly night under the stars.
The descent the next morning (with a hearty breakfast break at 3,100m) offers a chance to savor the highland scenery at a slower pace.
Guides & Permits: Congema safaris will arrange everything.
Camping Note: Summit temperatures plunge pack a four-season sleeping bag and windproof gear.
Difficulty Level: This is a demanding hike, suitable for hikers in good physical condition. The steep incline and high-altitude environment make it a challenging climb, especially on the ascent.
Weather: Be prepared for varying weather conditions. Temperatures can drop at night, and the climb during the day can be hot and strenuous. Warm clothing and plenty of water are essential.
What to Bring: Proper hiking boots, layered clothing, a hat, sunscreen, snacks, and a camera to capture the stunning views are recommended.

Organizing a safari in Kenya Destination, can be overwhelming due to the many choices available for transport, accommodation, and activities.
The most popular and shortest route, the Katesh Route starts from the town of Katesh on the southwestern side. Over 8.5 kilometers, you’ll climb 1,600 meters, which typically takes around five hours. Be prepared for a challenging ascent, especially if the sun is out temperatures can rise significantly.
On the other hand, if you’re trekking in the cooler months, be ready for chilly nights at the campsite. But once you reach the summit, the breathtaking views of Katesh and Lake Balangida make the effort worthwhile. The sunrises and sunsets from above the clouds are nothing short of spectacular.
This route offers a more scenic approach from the northwestern side, starting from Gendabi village. As you ascend, the views get progressively more stunning, providing a peaceful and picturesque experience.
The route is less trafficked, making it perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty, with sweeping panoramas of the surrounding landscapes.
If you’re looking for a more remote and nature-filled experience, the Giting Route on the eastern side of the mountain is ideal. Starting from Giting village, this route is known for excellent wildlife and bird-watching opportunities.
The climb is more secluded, making it a peaceful alternative for those who enjoy the serenity of nature, with the chance to observe animals in their natural habitat.
EXCELLENT Based on 271 reviews Crystel E2025-07-21Verified 7-day then two-day safari near Lake Natron Our safari went crescendo: Taranguire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and finally the superb Serengeti (4 days). Luck was with us, especially in the immense plains of the Serengeti: leopards, deer, cheetahs, families of lions and elephants, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, sumptuous birds, hyenas, and I pass...a wonder! Magic! Our young Francophone guide, Samuel, shared his many knowledge with us with immense enthusiasm and was absolutely adorable with our two children, ages 7 and 9; Osman, our driver, did everything to please us and took us to see the impressive wildebeest migration. As for our very smiling cook, Clemens, he regaled us with his delicious dishes. At the end of our Tanzanian stay, we spent two days in the incredible landscapes of Lake Natron and sacred Lengai Mountain. What to end the stay in style near the Maasai populations!
