Day by Day

Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

You’ll be picked up from your hotel in Kigali and start your adventure with a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about Rwanda and its evolution to one of the fastest-growing economies on the African continent. 

You’ll depart from Kigali for a scenic road trip to Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. The journey takes about 4 hours, offering picturesque views of the Virunga massive mountains. You will check into your lodge for a delicious dinner and rest for an exciting day of trekking through the forest the next day.

Where to stay

Day 2: Golden Monkey Trekking and Transfer to Bwindi National Park

After an early breakfast, you will drive to the visitor center to attend a briefing session conducted by park rangers about the guidelines to follow while tracking golden monkeys as well as gorillas depending on which option you choose. After the briefing, you’ll head into the jungle accompanied by experienced trackers to this serene tropical rainforest.

Once the golden monkeys have been located, you will spend a magical hour observing them up close. You’ll learn about their behavior, social structure, and conservation efforts to protect them. You’ll have a late transfer to the border of Rwanda-Uganda where you will continue to drive to Bwindi for your gorilla tracking adventure.

Your dinner and overnight stay will be at the edge of the forest (Please note that accommodation on this day depends on where your gorilla permits have been purchased or where you are trekking gorillas from).

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking and Community Visit

After your early breakfast (7:00 am), you will have a short drive to the UWA briefing center where you will be taken through the dos and don’ts while tracking gorillas. After you have been allocated a gorilla family in a group of 8 pax, you will be led by the armed ranger guides off the forest to search for the gorillas. 

When gorillas have been located, you will have one full hour of viewing them as they go on with their daily lives at a distance of 7-10 meters. After gorilla tracking, you will drive back to the lodge and relax at the lodge. If time allows, you will have a community tour as you conclude the day. Your dinner and overnight stay will be at the lodge.

Day 4: Drive through Ishasha for your Evening Kazinga Boat Cruise

After your breakfast, you’ll transfer to Kasenyi plains through the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth famous for the tree-climbing lions. You’ll drive through to Kasenyi Plains for your afternoon Kazinga boat cruise. 

If time allows, you will have a game drive in Kasenyi plains looking for wildlife such as elephants, leopards, lions, kobs, waterbuck, and cape buffalos among others. Your dinner and overnight stay in the middle of the park.

Day 5: Optional Chimpanzee Trekking and Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After your early breakfast (6:30 am) you transfer to Kasenyi Plains for your morning game before you depart to Lake Bunyonyi. Kindly note there is an option for chimpanzee trekking (100$ per person per permit) just in case you would like to add chimps to this primates expedition. After your morning game drive, you’ll transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for an overnight stay.

Where to stay

Day 6: Explore Bunyonyi and Transfer back to Kigali

After a relaxed morning with optional lodge activities on the lake. You will depart from Lake Bunyonyi to Kigali for your international flight. 

The transfer is about 3 hours with about an hour spent on crossing the border to Rwanda. End of the tour.
