Mabamba Bay Wetland, covering an impressive 2,424 hectares along the shores of Lake Victoria, is a birdwatcher’s haven. This vibrant ecosystem consists of vast open water and expansive marshes filled with miscanthus and papyrus, creating an ideal habitat for a diverse range of species. The wetland is renowned for its rich birdlife, particularly as a key breeding site for the globally threatened Shoebill.
In fact, Mabamba Bay is one of the world’s top locations for the Shoebill, with over 12 individuals sometimes recorded in a single day within a small area. Additionally, the wetland is home to more than 300 bird species, including large numbers of migratory birds such as the Blue Swallow, Papyrus Gonolek, and Papyrus Yellow Warbler, making it an essential stop for bird enthusiasts seeking rare and abundant species.
Mabamba Bay Wetland, located just 40 kilometers from Entebbe and nestled in the Kasanje village, is one of the largest and most significant swamps in Lake Victoria. The surrounding communities engage in activities like fishing, hunting, and mining, contributing to the local economy. However, it is the wetland’s incredible birdlife that truly sets it apart. With over 260 species recorded, including the globally renowned Shoebill Stork, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Blue Swallow, and the elusive Sitatunga antelope, Mabamba Bay is a must-visit for bird enthusiasts.
In 2006, Mabamba Swamp earned the prestigious status of a Ramsar Site, recognized as a Wetland of International Importance due to its rare and valuable biodiversity. The Ramsar Convention, established in 1971, is an intergovernmental treaty aimed at preserving wetlands worldwide, and Mabamba Bay plays a crucial role in this mission. Its international recognition as an Important Bird Area (IBA) further solidifies its place as one of Uganda’s prime birding destinations.
Located near Entebbe International Airport, Mabamba Bay is the perfect starting point for those embarking on a Ugandan safari. Its proximity to the airport, combined with its birding richness, makes it an ideal spot for a memorable nature experience in Uganda.
Mabamba is one of the best places to visit in Uganda and arguably across all of Africa for spotting the iconic shoebill. This striking, slate-gray bird is famous for its massive, clog-shaped bill and unique behavior, including clapping its bill like castanets when agitated. Visitors can explore the swamp in traditional canoes and encounter a variety of other fascinating bird species, such as the African fish eagle, palm-nut vulture, goliath heron, and the African jacana, known for walking delicately across water lilies.
Entebbe International Airport is located on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, offers a picturesque arrival point for visitors. This strategic location places travelers just a short distance from the Mabamba Swamp, a renowned bird-watching paradise and community-run ecotourism project.
The Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) is a remarkable bird, easily recognizable by its unique, foot-long, Dutch clog-shaped bill that gives it its name. The sharp edges and hooked tip of its bill are perfectly designed for grabbing, gripping, and killing prey. The Shoebill’s diet mainly consists of fish, with lungfish being a particular favorite, though it also hunts frogs, monitor lizards, and even baby crocodiles.
This solitary bird prefers ample space, maintaining a distance of at least 20 meters from others. During the breeding season, you might find up to two nests per square kilometer. Shoebills inhabit marshes and swampy areas, where they can thrive in their wetland environment.
In the wild, Shoebills can live up to 35 years, making them a long-lived species. Though often mistaken for storks, Shoebills are more closely related to pelicans and herons. Their striking appearance and fascinating behaviors make them one of the most iconic waterbirds in the world.
For the best chance of spotting the elusive Shoebill, an early morning visit to Mabamba Bay is essential. Glide through the tranquil swamp channels in a traditional canoe, immersing yourself in the serenity of this remarkable ecosystem. As you journey, your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating insights about the wetland’s diverse flora and fauna.
In addition to the Shoebill, Mabamba is home to an array of other majestic bird species, such as the African Marsh Harrier, Glossy Ibis, and Long-toed Lapwing. This rich birdlife, combined with the peaceful surroundings, makes Mabamba Bay a must-visit for any birding enthusiast.

Organizing a safari in Uganda Destination, can be overwhelming due to the many choices available for transport, accommodation, and activities.
Watching Butterflies
In addition to birdwatching, Mabamba Swamp is home to over 200 species of butterflies. Common species you can spot include the Bicyclus sebetus, Acraea consanquine, Acraea aganice, Achaea aurivilli, and Abisaraneavei.
The colorful butterflies add another layer of natural beauty to the swamp.
Spot Fishing
Fishing remains a popular activity in Mabamba, and the swamp offers an authentic glimpse of the local way of life. You can watch fishermen at work or join them, using either your own fishing equipment or locally crafted hooks and rods.
The most common fish species in the swamp include Tilapia, mudfish, lungfish, and Nile Perch.
Spotting the Sitatunga Antelope
Mabamba is an important sanctuary for the elusive Sitatunga antelope, a rare and endangered species. While birdwatching, you may also spot these graceful creatures, though their numbers have decreased due to poaching.
Efforts are ongoing to protect them through conservation and community awareness programs.
Canoeing
For those wanting to explore the swamp more deeply, canoeing offers an excellent way to spot more birds, enjoy fishing, and tour the nearby islands of Lake Victoria.
Canoes are typically provided with life jackets, ensuring a safe experience on the water.
Village Walks and Visiting Craft Shops
A village walk is a great way to engage with the local community, learn about their way of life, and see how they utilize the resources from the swamp.
You can also visit craft shops where local artisans create beautiful bags, mats, baskets, and huts using reeds from the swamp. These walks offer a deeper cultural insight into the village life surrounding the wetland.
Visiting Other Spots in Entebbe
After a day of birding at Mabamba Bay, you can explore more of Entebbe. Enjoy the serene shores of Lake Victoria, visit the Uganda Wildlife Education Center (a zoo and conservation area), or take a trip to the Ssese Islands or the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where you can learn more about local wildlife.
These activities make Mabamba Swamp a well-rounded destination for nature lovers, birders, and those looking to experience Uganda’s rural life.
Reaching Mabamba Swamp is easy and convenient from Entebbe, with a one-hour road trip to the village of Mabamba.
From there, a local boatman will take you out in traditional dugout canoes, offering a serene and authentic experience as you glide through the wetland.
This makes for a perfect half-day excursion, ideal for those with a few hours between flights. The scenic boat ride across Lake Victoria is another option, allowing you to enjoy the stunning surroundings and birdlife along the way.
Nkima Forest Lodge is currently the best option for comfortable accommodation near Mabamba Bay. This charming mid-range (3-star) lodge is in the heart of Nkima Forest, offering stunning views of both the Mabamba Wetland and Lake Victoria in the distance.
The main house, which houses the lounge, restaurant, and library, is perched on top of a hill, providing a perfect vantage point to relax and take in the surrounding forest. The lodge features 8 spacious, beautifully furnished cottages, each located in various spots throughout the forest. In addition to the cottages, Nkima Forest Lodge offers a high deck near the forest canopy, ideal for birdwatching and observing the playful monkeys. From here, guests can also catch glimpses of Lake Victoria through the tree cover.
For nature lovers and birders boarding on their Ugandan adventure, Nkima Forest Lodge is the perfect retreat, conveniently located near Entebbe and Mabamba Bay. It’s a fantastic base for starting your birding journey and exploring the abundant wildlife in both Mabamba and Nkima Forest.
EXCELLENT Based on 271 reviews Crystel E2025-07-21Verified 7-day then two-day safari near Lake Natron Our safari went crescendo: Taranguire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and finally the superb Serengeti (4 days). Luck was with us, especially in the immense plains of the Serengeti: leopards, deer, cheetahs, families of lions and elephants, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, sumptuous birds, hyenas, and I pass...a wonder! Magic! Our young Francophone guide, Samuel, shared his many knowledge with us with immense enthusiasm and was absolutely adorable with our two children, ages 7 and 9; Osman, our driver, did everything to please us and took us to see the impressive wildebeest migration. As for our very smiling cook, Clemens, he regaled us with his delicious dishes. At the end of our Tanzanian stay, we spent two days in the incredible landscapes of Lake Natron and sacred Lengai Mountain. What to end the stay in style near the Maasai populations!
