Things to do in Rwanda

Gorilla Trekking in the Most Accessible Location in Africa

Gorilla trekking through Rwanda’s montane rainforests is the nation’s top tourist destination and possibly the most captivating wildlife experience on the planet.

Every visitor to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is left with enduring memories of these up-close interactions with small families of the last remaining mountain gorillas in the world

Because they cannot thrive in captivity, the only way to observe the about 900 mountain gorillas that remain on Earth is to walk into their natural habitats. With Volcanoes National Park just 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Kigali International Airport, Rwanda offers some of Africa’s most accessible gorilla trekking experiences.

This is the best place to observe gorillas in Africa if you are traveling to Rwanda and have limited time.Your gorilla trekking adventure can be completed in five days or fewer if you only land in Kigali, get driven to your lodge, hike the next day, and depart for the airport the next morning.

Track Chimpanzees & More Primates

There are many different primate trekking experiences to enjoy while in Rwanda, even though gorilla trekking is one of the most popular tourist destinations.

Chimpanzees and Rwenzori colobus monkeys are among the thirteen different primate species (about 25% of all primates in Africa) that call Nyungwe Forest National Park home.

Nyungwe Forest National Park is a vast, unspoiled tropical rainforest with a tall, dense canopy that is situated in Rwanda’s southwest. The largest remaining tract of montane forest in East or Central Africa is found in Nyungwe Forest, which covers an area of 1,000 square kilometers (385 square miles).

Approximately 310 bird species, more than 75 animal species, hundreds of butterflies, and orchids can all be found there. The misty hills of Nyungwe, a location of remarkable biodiversity and the epitome of a tropical rainforest, resound with the sounds of songbirds and chimpanzees.

Witness the Big Five

Although Rwanda may not always be the most obvious destination for a “classic” safari, if you are traveling there to go gorilla trekking, it would be wise to include a safari in Akagera National Park to your itinerary.

Akagera is one of Africa’s most picturesque parks, featuring savannah grasslands, lakes, papyrus swamps, undulating hills, and wide valleys.

About 8,000 animals and the largest protected wetlands in Central Africa can be found at Akagera. In Akagera National Park, lions were introduced in 2015, and two years later, Eastern black rhinos. For the first time in nearly two decades, Akagera was a renowned Big 5 safari destination thanks to these successful reintroduction initiatives.

Today, Akagera is managed in partnership with African Parks, a non-governmental conservation organisation, which has made a very positive impact on life in this beautiful safari park.

Explore Kigali City Tour

When traveling to Rwanda, you will probably need to stay in Kigali, the country’s contemporary and immaculate capital, for one or two nights.

With a thriving dining and nightlife scene, this stunning city is spread across innumerable hills, ridges, and valleys.

The city center is also home to a large number of retail malls with stylish boutiques and charming coffee shops.

If you are staying in Kigali, you should visit the Natural History Museum and the State House Museum. The heartbreaking Kigali Genocide Memorial, however, is arguably one of Rwanda’s most well-known sights.

This informative memorial highlights Rwanda’s history before the genocide, helps put the genocide’s beginnings in perspective, and acknowledges the country’s progress in the years since.

Hike the Congo-Nile Trail

Rwanda has rapidly positioned itself as one of Africa’s top tourism destinations, thanks in part to the efforts of the Rwanda Development Board. One of the standout experiences now offered is hiking along the Congo-Nile Trail.

This scenic trail, which stretches along the shores of Lake Kivu, offers visitors the chance to immerse themselves in Rwanda’s breathtaking natural beauty.

As you trek through lush greenery, rolling hills, and serene lake waters, you’ll also enjoy panoramic views of the nearby mountains. Hiking the Congo-Nile Trail has become one of the most popular activities for those on a Rwanda safari, providing an unforgettable blend of adventure and nature.

Hike Mount Karisimbi

Mount Karisimbi, is a highlight of the Virunga mountain range and a must-do for adventure seekers visiting Musanze.

The challenging 6-hour hike to the summit rewards trekkers with stunning views of Volcanoes National Park and the opportunity to spot a variety of bird species along the way.

For the ultimate adventure, many visitors choose to combine their Mount Karisimbi trek with mountain gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park. However, this combination is physically demanding and requires a good level of fitness to complete within a few days, making it an ideal option for those looking for a more rigorous Rwanda safari experience.

Hike Mount Bisoke

Mount Bisoke, an active volcano straddling the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, is an exciting trek for nature lovers exploring Rwanda.

This 6-hour hike features steep sections, but the effort is well worth it. At the summit, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Volcanoes National Park and the stunning Crater Lake nestled within the mountain.

Surrounded by lush green landscapes, the trek offers an unforgettable opportunity to immerse yourself in Rwanda’s natural beauty, making it a top choice for those seeking an adventurous and scenic experience during their Rwanda tour.

Discover Rwanda’s Unique Hot Springs

Rwanda is home to several stunning hot springs, which are natural wonders formed by geothermal activity beneath the Earth’s surface.

These hot water bodies, often associated with volcanic regions, are not only a rare geographical feature but also hold cultural significance for the local communities.

Visitors can explore hot springs such as Bugarama, Gisenyi, Kinigi, and Nyamyumba, each offering a unique experience with varying temperatures and scenic surroundings. The warm waters, heated deep underground, rise to the surface, creating a natural oasis that invites relaxation and awe.

Some hot springs are revered for their therapeutic properties, and local traditions often link them to ancient beliefs. If you’re looking for a distinctive and calming experience during your Rwanda tour, a visit to one of these geothermal wonders should be on your list!
