Things to do in Kenya

Experience the Thrill of the Great Migration in Maasai Mara

Step into the heart of one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife spectacles, the Great Migration in Maasai Mara National Reserve.

Between July and October, the vast plains come alive as over two million wildebeest, zebras, and antelopes embark on a daring journey in search of fresh grazing lands, braving treacherous river crossings and the relentless pursuit of Africa’s top predators.

This epic migration isn’t just about the sheer numbers, it’s a high-stakes drama where lions, cheetahs, leopards, and hyenas lie in wait, making for some of the most thrilling wildlife encounters on the planet. The Mara River crossings, where wildebeest plunge into crocodile-infested waters, are a heart-pounding highlight, offering a front-row seat to the raw power of nature.

Regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World, the Great Migration is a bucket-list safari experience and one of Kenya’s top tourist attractions. Whether you’re capturing breathtaking photos from a game drive, floating above the savanna in a hot air balloon, or staying in a luxury tented camp, witnessing this once-in-a-lifetime phenomenon will leave you in awe.

Nairobi City Tour

Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, is the fourth-largest city in Africa and holds the unique distinction of being the only city in the world that borders a national park, Nairobi National Park. Its close proximity to numerous other national parks and reserves makes it the perfect starting point for an unforgettable safari adventure.

While it has earned a reputation for being unsafe in certain areas, with some neighborhoods known for their high crime rates.

This engaging city tour lasts between three and five hours, offering a perfect way to experience the energetic pulse of Nairobi and gain an insight into its unique blend of African life. Known by many names Safari Capital of the World, Green City under the Sun, or even Nairobery – Nairobi has much to offer.

Step into the World of Karen Blixen

Transport yourself to colonial-era Kenya with a visit to the Karen Blixen Museum, the former home of the renowned Danish author behind Out of Africa.

Nestled in the serene outskirts of Nairobi, this beautifully preserved estate offers a captivating look into Blixen’s life, her love for Kenya, and the inspirations behind her legendary literary works.

Wander through the historic house and admire an exquisite collection of artifacts, photographs, and original furnishings, each telling a story of a bygone era. As you stroll through the lush gardens, where Blixen once found solace and creativity, you can almost envision the landscapes that shaped her timeless tales.

A visit to this iconic museum is more than a step back in time, it’s an opportunity to experience the spirit of one of Kenya’s most celebrated literary figures and to appreciate the rich cultural heritage that continues to inspire travelers from around the world.

Visit Lamu

Lamu Town evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of Zanzibar’s Stonetown. Like Zanzibar, Lamu was founded as a Swahili settlement in the Middle Ages and is sufficiently removed from the hustle of major government centers to feel like a completely different world.

As Kenya’s longest-inhabited town, Lamu offers much more than meets the eye. While it may appear quaint at first glance, it is rich in history and culture.

The town is dotted with impressive architecture, and its fishing traditions seem unshaken by the modern world. The bustling spice markets, centuries-old mosques, and the ever-present donkeys as the primary mode of transport are testaments to its enduring charm.

A visit to Lamu wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Lamu Museum. Here, you can delve into the region’s rich cultural heritage, with exhibits showcasing intricately carved wooden doors, ornate jewelry, and more. Housed in the former residence of some of Lamu’s most notable figures, the museum itself speaks volumes about the sophistication of this part of Africa long before the arrival of European settlers.

Lamu Fort, another key highlight, offers a fascinating glimpse into the town’s storied past. Built by the Sultan of Pate, Fumo Madi ibn Abi Bakr, and completed in 1820, the fort stands as a reminder of Lamu’s historical significance in the region.

Visit Lake Nakuru

While Kenya is a vast country most of its top attractions require more than just a day to fully experience. However, Lake Nakuru, located about 140 kilometers north of Nairobi, is an exception. It can be visited comfortably in a day, making it an accessible option for a quick getaway from the capital.

Many travel blogs mention Lake Nakuru’s flamingo populations, which used to be one of the lake’s main draws. However, this is no longer the case.

The lake’s changing water levels have altered its alkalinity, which is crucial for flamingos who thrive in more alkaline waters. While the flamingos have dwindled, the lake remains home to a variety of birdlife.

Beyond the birds, Lake Nakuru is known for its thriving population of both black and white rhinos, as well as lions, leopards, and Rothschild’s giraffes. If you’re set on seeing flamingos, consider heading to Lake Natron on the Kenya/Tanzania border instead, where the conditions are more suitable for these iconic birds.

Climb Mount Kenya

Rising to 3,800 meters (17,000 feet), Mount Kenya stands as the highest peak in the country and the second tallest in Africa, following Kilimanjaro.

The mountain massif features three primary peaks: Batian and Nelion, which offer technical climbs for experienced mountaineers, and Point Lenana, which is a challenging but non-technical trek suitable for most adventurers.

Climbers typically follow a combination of three main routes Naro Moru, Sirimon, and Chogoria taking about five days to reach the summit. The trek offers stunning views of glaciers, lakes, mineral springs, and alpine forests, making it a top choice for active travelers seeking an unforgettable experience in Kenya.

For those seeking a more rugged adventure, various campsites are available around the mountain, and several lodges offer additional activities such as guided nature walks, horse riding tours, and trout fishing. The mountain’s streams and lakes are renowned for their large rainbow trout, making it one of the prime destinations for fly fishing in Kenya.

Walk in the Karura Forest

Covering 2,700 acres, Karura Forest offers a serene escape into nature, providing a refreshing break from Nairobi’s hustle and bustle.

Known as the “green lungs” of the city, the forest features 50 kilometers of hiking and cycling trails that weave through dense woodlands, past three rivers, towering eucalyptus trees, bamboo groves, and open meadows.

Explore the breathtaking 15-meter-high waterfall, the peaceful Lily Lake quarry pond, or the historic Mau Mau caves. Keep an eye out for a variety of wildlife, including birds, monkeys, and duikers. Pack a picnic to enjoy amidst nature or stop by the cozy café near the Limuru Road Gate to recharge.

Cycle through Hell’s Gate

Hell’s Gate National Park offers a rare and thrilling experience exploring a wildlife park on foot or by bicycle. Unlike most African parks, Hell’s Gate is free of dangerous predators, making it an ideal destination for adventure seekers.

The park’s dramatic landscape, sculpted by two extinct volcanoes, boasts towering cliffs, deep gorges, and geothermal wonders like hot springs and natural geysers.

For those looking for exciting things to do in Kenya, cycling through Hell’s Gate is a must. Wind your way through open savannahs and rugged trails, soaking in the raw beauty of this remarkable terrain. No bike? No problem! Rentals are available inside the park and from vendors near the entrance, ensuring you don’t miss out on this one-of-a-kind experience.

Visit Watamu Beach

Kenya is home to breathtaking landscapes, but few places rival the sheer beauty of Watamu Beach.

This stretch of paradise along the Indian Ocean is the very definition of a dream beach powdery white sand that gleams under the sun, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and an atmosphere of pure tranquility.

Watamu isn’t just about sunbathing and relaxation; it’s also a world-class destination for snorkelling and scuba diving. The Watamu Marine National Park boasts an underwater wonderland teeming with over 600 species of fish and 100 varieties of coral. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or a first-time snorkeller, the vibrant marine life and mesmerizing coral reefs will leave you spellbound.

Beyond the beach, Watamu offers a unique cultural blend, heavily influenced by its large Italian expat community. You’ll find charming cafés, beachfront restaurants, and delicious seafood with a Mediterranean twist. For those looking for a lively resort vibe, Malindi is just 15 kilometers away, offering even more options for a luxurious coastal retreat.

Uncover the Old Town of Mombasa

Mombasa, Kenya’s oldest and second-largest city, is a place of contrasts. Some see it as a bustling commercial port with chaotic ferry crossings, while others, like myself, are captivated by its rich history and cultural depth.

For centuries, Mombasa was a powerful city-state, ruled by sultans and influenced by traders from Arabia, Persia, and India. This vibrant past is best explored in the eastern part of the island, where the city’s medieval street layout remains intact.

Strolling through the labyrinth of narrow alleys, you’ll discover ancient Swahili architecture, spice markets, and the occasional souvenir shop leading up to the historic Fort Jesus, a must-visit.

Built by the Portuguese in the late 1500s, Fort Jesus stands as a sentinel overlooking the entrance to Mombasa’s harbor. Inside, you’ll find fascinating exhibits, old cannons, and even 16th-century graffiti left behind by soldiers.

Mombasa also offers more modern landmarks, such as the Pembe Za Ndovu (Elephant Tusks) on Moi Avenue constructed in the 1950s to commemorate a visit by the British royal family. If you’re looking for a blend of nature and history, Haller Park Game Sanctuary provides a tranquil escape just outside the city, home to giraffes, hippos, and other wildlife.

Mombasa may have its challenges, but for those willing to explore, it reveals a treasure trove of history, culture, and Swahili charm.

Encounter with Baby Elephants at David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust

Located within the expansive Nairobi National Park, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust offers a touching and educational experience for wildlife enthusiasts. This renowned conservation organization is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and eventual release of orphaned elephants and rhinos back into the wild.

During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to witness the playful antics of baby elephants as they interact with their caretakers and other young elephants.

The trust’s nursery is a fascinating place where you can learn about their important conservation work and the challenges faced by Africa’s wildlife today.

For those looking to make a difference, the trust offers the chance to adopt an orphaned elephant, giraffe, or rhino, helping to fund their care and rehabilitation. Adopters receive regular updates on their chosen animal’s progress, making it a truly meaningful way to contribute to wildlife conservation.

Diani Beach

Welcome to Diani Beach, Kenya’s premier coastal escape, where pristine white sands merge with the mesmerizing turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. This breathtaking paradise on the southern coast is a dream destination for sun worshippers, adventure seekers, and luxury travelers alike.

Renowned for its crystal-clear waters and vibrant marine life, Diani Beach offers an array of exhilarating activities, from scuba diving and deep-sea fishing to dolphin watching and kitesurfing on the warm ocean breeze.

Whether you’re craving heart-pounding water sports or simply wish to unwind beneath swaying palm trees, this coastal gem delivers an unforgettable experience.

Beyond the beach, Diani’s lively atmosphere sets the stage for indulgence and relaxation. Trendy beachfront bars, gourmet restaurants, and chic resorts line the shore, offering world-class hospitality, fresh seafood, and tropical cocktails with stunning sunset views.

As you take a leisurely stroll along the shoreline, you may encounter playful monkeys swinging between the palm fronds or witness graceful dolphins dancing in the waves. The magic of Diani Beach lies not just in its breathtaking scenery but in its seamless blend of adventure, culture, and tranquility.

For those looking to experience the ultimate East African beach getaway, Diani Beach is more than a destination, it’s a tropical paradise waiting to be explored.

Savor the Flavors of East Africa

After an exhilarating day of exploring Kenya’s breathtaking landscapes and wildlife, there’s no better way to unwind than by indulging in the country’s rich and diverse cuisine. A fusion of African, Indian, and Arabic influences, Kenya’s food scene is a delightful mix of bold flavors and hearty meals.

Savor the warmth of chai masala, a fragrant spiced tea that fuels morning conversations. Sink your teeth into nyama choma, Kenya’s beloved grilled meat, best enjoyed with friends.

Experience the comforting taste of ugali, a staple maize porridge, often paired with sukuma wiki (collard greens) and stews. Pilau, a fragrant rice dish infused with spices, and crispy, golden samosas add an exotic touch to any meal. And for those with a sweet tooth, mandazi, fluffy fried dough with a hint of coconut, is the perfect treat to end your feast.

Every bite of Kenyan cuisine tells a story of tradition, community, and the rich cultural tapestry that makes this country so special. So sit back, enjoy the feast, and let the flavors of Kenya be a memorable part of your journey!
