Explore a Tanzania safari

Tanzania is Africa’s ultimate safari destination, a land of endless wonders, abundant wildlife, and awe-inspiring landscapes. From the towering Mount Kilimanjaro to the rolling plains of the Serengeti National Park, every corner of this country tells a story of adventure and natural beauty. Whether you dream of witnessing the Great Migration safari, exploring ancient craters, or relaxing on pristine beaches, Tanzania safari tours offer something truly extraordinary for everyone.

Imagine yourself gazing across the breathtaking Ngorongoro Crater, spotting lions, elephants, and rhinos on thrilling Tanzania game drives, or floating silently above the Serengeti in a balloon safari at sunrise. Here, the wilderness comes alive, from the stealthy caracal and playful hippos to the majestic giraffes and powerful African wild dogs. On a Tanzania African safari, you don’t just watch the wild; you become part of it.

At night, unwind in cozy Serengeti tented camps and lodges, where the rhythmic sounds of the savannah become your evening lullaby. Each stay blends comfort and authenticity, allowing you to connect deeply with nature while enjoying world-class hospitality.

A Land of Contrasts and Natural Wonders

Tanzania is a country of remarkable contrasts, home to Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro, and its fifth highest, Mount Meru, a dormant volcano offering one of the continent’s most rewarding climbs. From lush forests and sparkling lakes to golden beaches and open plains, Tanzania’s scenery is as diverse as its wildlife.

The best time to visit Tanzania depends on your dream adventure. The dry season (June to October) is perfect for wildlife viewing and the Great Migration safari, while the green season brings dramatic skies and newborn animals.

EXPLORE TANZANIA’S SAFARI CIRCUITS

Because Tanzania is vast – nearly one and a half times the size of Texas, its attractions are divided into four major safari circuits, each offering a unique experience:

1. Northern Safari Circuit

The most popular route for Tanzania safari packages, the north includes the legendary Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, and Mount Kilimanjaro.

This region is also where you can follow the world-famous Great Migration safari, a spectacle of millions of wildebeests and zebras moving across the plains.

For a quieter, more remote experience, explore Ruaha, Nyerere (Selous), and Mikumi National Parks. These hidden gems are perfect for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path Tanzania safari tours, rich in wildlife and dramatic scenery.

3. Western Tanzania

Head west to the wild and untouched Katavi and Mahale Mountains, home to large buffalo herds and rare chimpanzees.

Nearby Lake Tanganyika, one of the world’s deepest lakes, offers pristine views and opportunities for boating and swimming.

No Serengeti safari itinerary is complete without a beach escape. The powdery sands and turquoise waters of Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia Island provide the perfect ending to your adventure.

Enjoy scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, and a glimpse into the Swahili coast’s rich cultural history.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME FOR A TANZANIA SAFARI?

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but choosing the best time for a Tanzania safari depends on what kind of adventure you’re looking for. While weather patterns have become less predictable in recent years, Tanzania still offers distinct seasons – each with its own unique safari experiences.

July to October - Peak Safari Season

This is the best time for Tanzania safaris for most travelers. The weather is warm and dry, making wildlife easier to spot as animals gather around water sources.

It’s also when the Great Wildebeest Migration reaches its dramatic climax in the northern Serengeti, with breathtaking river crossings at the Mara River. Expect fantastic game viewing, clear skies, and excellent photography conditions the true highlight of Tanzania safari tours.

November to December - The Short Rains

The short rains bring refreshing showers, but wildlife sightings remain incredible. This season also marks the arrival of migratory birds, transforming Tanzania into a birdwatcher’s paradise.

Resident species don their bright breeding plumage, and prices for Tanzania adventure tours drop slightly, making this a great value period to visit.

January to Mid-March - Calving Season

This is Tanzania’s short dry season, often warm and humid, especially along the coast. In the Southern Serengeti, the vast plains come alive as hundreds of thousands of wildebeests give birth during the calving season.

It’s one of nature’s most moving spectacles – and an unforgettable experience for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.

Mid-March to Early June - The Long Rains

This period brings heavier rainfall across much of Tanzania. Some lodges and camps close, but those who venture out are rewarded with lush green landscapes, dramatic skies, and peaceful parks with fewer tourists.

For seasoned travelers, this is a secret window for quiet and budget-friendly Tanzania safari tours.

Each season in Tanzania offers something special from the intense predator action during the calving season to the iconic river crossings of the Great Migration. Whether you’re planning a luxury escape or a classic Tanzania adventure tour, we’ll help you choose the best time for your Tanzania safari based on your travel style and what you’d love to see.

Frequently Asked Questions

about Traveling to Tanzania

1. What is the cost of a trip to Tanzania?

The cost of your trip depends on several factors, including the route, style of accommodation, trip duration, and number of travelers. Once we understand your preferences, we’ll create a personalized itinerary and share the exact costs involved.

Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the best time is from late June to October, the dry season. Wildlife is easier to spot during this time due to thinner vegetation and animals gathering around water sources.

Yes, a valid visa is required. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months.
Visa on arrival: Available at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for $50 (U.S. citizens pay $100 for a multiple-entry visa).
We recommend obtaining your visa in advance to avoid delays at the airport.

We recommend consulting a travel clinic. Common vaccinations include:
Hepatitis A & B
Typhoid
Yellow Fever (Required if you’re traveling from or transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country for 12+ hours).

The risk is relatively low, but it’s best to consult your doctor for the most up-to-date advice and malaria prevention options before your trip.

Yes, safaris in Tanzania are generally safe. You’ll be with professional guides and stay in secure lodges and camps. While you’ll be in close proximity to wildlife, your guides are trained to ensure your safety at all times.

Expect flavorful dishes influenced by African, Indian, and coastal cuisines. Common staples include:
Ugali (maize porridge)
Rice and plantains
Accompanied by stews of beef, chicken, fish, or goat
Street foods like mshikaki (grilled meat skewers), samosas, chapatis, and roasted corn are a must-try!

Wear neutral-colored clothing like brown, green, or beige to blend into the natural environment. Avoid white (shows dirt easily), black (attracts heat), and blue (attracts tsetse flies). Comfortable, breathable layers are ideal.

Generally, walking inside national parks is restricted for safety. However, guided walking safaris are available in parks like: Selous Game Reserve, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Arusha National Park, Ngorongoro (crater rim walks) Some lodges in Serengeti also offer guided short nature walks.

The local currency is the Tanzanian Shilling (TSh). However, US Dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Only bring USD bills printed after 2009, as older notes are not accepted.

Yes, ATMs are available in major towns like Arusha. Keep in mind:
ATMs do not dispense USD.
Maximum withdrawal is about 400,000 TSh (less than $200).
Remote areas and beach lodges often have no ATMs, so carry enough cash.

Yes, most lodges and larger shops accept Visa and Mastercard. However, a surcharge may apply. For small purchases and local markets, cash is preferred.

Look for local handicrafts such as:
Beaded jewelry
Makonde carvings
Kitenge fabrics
Handmade baskets Major curio shops accept credit cards, and prices are often negotiable.

We offer a range of accommodations to suit different budgets:
Safari lodges
Tented camps
Hotels and guesthouses
Home-stays and hostels
Camping options
Most offer clean, secure, and comfortable stays with a local touch.

A game drive is a guided excursion into the national parks in a safari vehicle to view wildlife up close. You’ll explore remote areas and experience Tanzania’s most iconic animals in their natural habitat.

General Climate:
Coastal areas: Hot and humid
Highlands: Cooler and temperate
Annual Patterns:
Jan-Feb: Dry and warm
Mar-May: Long rainy season
Jun-Oct: Dry season, ideal for safaris
Nov-Dec: Short rains with brief thunderstorms

Yellow Fever vaccination is not required unless:
You’re arriving from or transiting through a Yellow Fever endemic country for more than 12 hours.
You’re visiting Zanzibar.

This depends on your trip and personal preferences. We recommend budgeting for:
Extra meals and drinks
Optional activities
Souvenirs and tips
Our trip notes will help you estimate additional expenses for your specific itinerary.

Yes, depending on where you’re from.
Most electrical sockets in Tanzania accept UK-style plugs (Type G). Travelers from European countries, the US, and elsewhere should bring a universal travel adapter.
Voltage: 230V AC
Frequency: 50Hz
If your device supports 230V (which most modern electronics do), you’ll only need an adapter. However, if your appliance is not compatible with 230 volts, you’ll need a voltage converter to avoid damaging your equipment.

WIFI in Lodges: Most lodges and camps provide free WIFI. While it’s typically reliable for checking emails, browsing, or making WhatsApp calls, it may not support streaming or large file downloads due to limited bandwidth in remote areas.
Mobile Internet: For better and more flexible connectivity, consider buying a local SIM card with a data package upon arrival.
Airtel is widely recommended for its strong coverage across many safari regions and urban centers.
SIM cards and data bundles are available at most international airports, mobile shops, and kiosks.

Packing smart is key to enjoying your safari to the fullest! Here’s a handy checklist of essentials and tips:
General Packing Tips
Pack Light: Most lodges offer laundry services, so there’s no need to overpack.
Soft-sided luggage is mandatory for internal flights, with a maximum weight limit of 20 kg (including hand luggage).
Clothing & Footwear
Neutral-colored clothing (khaki, green, beige) for game drives – helps blend into the environment and avoid attracting insects.
Sturdy walking shoes or boots for nature walks and uneven terrain.
Lightweight waterproof jacket for unexpected showers.
Wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and a scarf, for sun protection and dusty roads.
Swimsuit & beachwear – essential if you’re heading to Zanzibar or coastal areas.
Sandals or flip-flops – ideal for relaxing at your lodge or on the beach.
