Mount Kenya Trek via Sirimon - Naro Moru Route

5 Days | 4 Nights

From $ 888 / person

Your trip overview

Mount Kenya, a striking extinct volcanic massif straddling the equator, is Africa’s second-highest mountain at 5,199 meters (17,057 feet), second only to Kilimanjaro. Draped in glaciers, jagged peaks, and rich biodiversity, it offers one of the most spectacular trekking experiences on the continent.

This 5-day Sirimon-Naro Moru route trek provides a balanced and scenic traverse of the mountain. The Sirimon Route, located on the dry northwest face, offers a gentler ascent through lush forests, open moorlands, and the breathtaking Mackinder’s Valley, ideal for acclimatization and photography.

After conquering Point Lenana (4,985m), the most accessible trekking peak, the descent follows the steeper Naro Moru Route, known for its dramatic descent through the infamous Vertical Bog and scenic Teleki Valley.

This route is perfect for trekkers looking for diverse terrain, less crowded trails, and a challenging but rewarding high-altitude experience. Along the way, you’ll encounter rare Afro-alpine vegetation, glacial lakes, and wildlife like rock hyrax, sunbirds, and even the occasional hyena or eland.

With professional guides, porter support, and strategically placed camps, this 5-day adventure is one of the best ways to experience the grandeur of Mount Kenya, from alpine heights to lush rainforest foothills.

Day 3: Judmaier Camp - Shipton’s Camp (4,200m)

After an early breakfast at Judmaier Camp, you’ll begin a rewarding and scenic trek toward Shipton’s Camp, following the classic Sirimon Trail. The route leads uphill past the old meteorological station, gradually entering higher altitudes and thinner air.

You’ll reach the Liki North junction, where you turn right and descend to cross the Ontulili River, then ascend again along a gentle ridge. The landscape now transforms into the dramatic Afro-alpine zone, characterized by tussock grasses, giant groundsel, and lobelias, signature vegetation of Mount Kenya’s upper slopes.

After crossing the Liki North River, the trail begins to climb steadily, eventually bringing you to a ridge with your first panoramic view over the expansive Mackinder’s Valley, the mountain’s widest and most iconic glacial valley. Here, the peaks of Batian, Nelion, and Lenana tower overhead, dominating the horizon.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Shipton’s Camp (4,200m), nestled dramatically below the main peaks. This is your base for the summit push and a perfect location to rest, acclimatize, and enjoy the stunning alpine scenery. Total hiking distance today is 11 km, taking about 6-8 hours.

You’ll wake in the early hours (around 2:30 a.m.) and begin your pre-dawn ascent under the stars. The climb to the summit is steep and challenging, but non-technical, making it accessible to trekkers with good physical fitness. After 2.5-4 hours of climbing over rocky trails and scree slopes, you’ll reach Point Lenana just in time for sunrise, a truly breathtaking reward. On a clear morning, you may even see Mount Kilimanjaro glowing in the distance to the south.
