Gorilla group allocations are managed by the respective wildlife authorities in Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. In Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is responsible, while in Rwanda, it’s the Rwanda Development Board (RDB), and in Congo, it’s the Virunga National Park management team.
Gorilla permits in each of these countries provide access to the mountain gorillas, and the assignment of specific groups is handled by park officials on the day of the trek.
In the early days of gorilla trekking, visitors would book their gorilla group months in advance, often based on specific group preferences.
However, as gorilla trekking gained popularity, this method proved ineffective. Popular groups like Rushegura in Uganda often sold out quickly, while less-visited families, such as Mubare, saw fewer visitors.
To address this imbalance, the park management began assigning gorilla groups on the day of the trek based on several factors.
Trekking to see mountain gorillas involves traversing dense forests and sometimes challenging terrain. Depending on the difficulty of the trek, travelers are assigned to groups based on their physical fitness.
The park staff assess fitness levels by appearance, but it’s important to communicate any concerns about your physical condition beforehand. Those with lower fitness levels are assigned to nearby groups, while more experienced trekkers can opt for more challenging groups.
Visitors with mobility issues or older guests can be provided with **Sedan chairs** and porters to assist during the trek.
The gorilla permit you hold determines which sector you can visit. Each permit is specific to a sector in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Volcanoes National Park.
For example, if you have a Rushaga sector permit, you will be allocated to a gorilla group within that sector. Therefore, it’s crucial to check your permit’s details before the trek.
While park officials are responsible for allocation, your preferences are still taken into account. If you have a particular group in mind or want to be in a specific sector, it’s essential to inform your tour operator well in advance.
Some experienced operators have connections and can help secure your preferred group.
Age is also considered, but it’s not always a reliable indicator of physical capability. For example, a 60-year-old could be fitter than a 20-year-old.
Park officials may consider the age of travelers (using passports or appearance), but younger travelers (under 19) are usually assigned to easier treks as they may not be as mentally prepared.
Conversely, older travelers who feel fit enough for a more strenuous trek should inform the officials in advance.
During peak seasons, gorilla permits are in high demand, and it may be challenging to get your desired group. However, during the off-peak season, there’s more flexibility, and you have a higher chance of getting your preferred group.
If you’ve already tracked a particular group on a previous day, there’s a higher chance you’ll be allocated to that group again for double trekking.
Building rapport with the rangers can increase your chances, especially if you’ve tipped them after your previous trek.
When trekking in Bwindi, it’s wise to book accommodation within the sector you’ve been assigned to, as the park is vast.
Staying closer to the trekking start point ensures you won’t miss the activity due to long travel times.
Gorilla permits can sell out quickly, especially during peak season, so it’s important to book your trip early to ensure availability.
Early booking also gives your operator time to secure the best permits for you.
While you may not always get your first-choice gorilla group, the overall chances of spotting gorillas are high.
Trackers go out early in the morning to locate the groups, increasing the likelihood that you’ll encounter the primates, regardless of the group you are assigned.

Organizing a safari in Kenya Destination, can be overwhelming due to the many choices available for transport, accommodation, and activities.
EXCELLENT Based on 271 reviews Crystel E2025-07-21Verified 7-day then two-day safari near Lake Natron Our safari went crescendo: Taranguire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and finally the superb Serengeti (4 days). Luck was with us, especially in the immense plains of the Serengeti: leopards, deer, cheetahs, families of lions and elephants, warthogs, zebras, giraffes, sumptuous birds, hyenas, and I pass...a wonder! Magic! Our young Francophone guide, Samuel, shared his many knowledge with us with immense enthusiasm and was absolutely adorable with our two children, ages 7 and 9; Osman, our driver, did everything to please us and took us to see the impressive wildebeest migration. As for our very smiling cook, Clemens, he regaled us with his delicious dishes. At the end of our Tanzanian stay, we spent two days in the incredible landscapes of Lake Natron and sacred Lengai Mountain. What to end the stay in style near the Maasai populations!
