for Trekking in Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo

Overview

Mountain gorillas, one of the world’s most endangered species, are found only in the Virunga Conservation Area, which includes Virunga National Park in DR Congo, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, and Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga National Parks in Uganda.

If you wish to visit these majestic creatures in the wild, you must secure a gorilla permit before embarking on your trek.

What is a Gorilla Permit?

A gorilla permit is an official document or card that grants you permission to track mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

It is a necessary requirement for tourists who want to visit gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda, or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Without a permit, you will not be allowed to participate in the trek or interact with the gorillas.

Unlike other wildlife activities such as game viewing, gorilla permits must be purchased well in advance. This is because gorilla tourism is highly regulated to ensure the preservation of these incredible animals.

Limiting the number of tourists visiting the gorillas each day and the time spent with them, just one hour helps reduce their exposure to humans and minimizes the impact on their habitat. With only a limited number of permits available per day, securing your gorilla permit early is essential.

The easiest way to obtain a gorilla permit is through a local tour operator. Tour operators are experienced in securing permits on your behalf and can assist with planning the entire trip, including transport, accommodation, and permits.

Since gorilla permits are in high demand, they must be purchased or booked ahead of time to guarantee availability.

In Uganda, the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) sells a maximum of 160 gorilla permits each day. These are divided between Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park.

The high demand means it’s important to secure your permit as early as possible, especially during peak seasons.

The cost of a gorilla permit varies by country:

  • Rwanda: A gorilla permit in Rwanda costs $1,500 per person.
  • Uganda: The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda is $700 for non-residents and $600 for foreign residents.
  • Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC): Congo offers the most affordable gorilla permits at $400 per person.

Due to the limited availability of permits, it’s recommended that you purchase your gorilla permit at least 6 months in advance.

This ensures you don’t miss out, particularly during peak tourist seasons. Working with a local tour agent will help you secure your permit and ensure your trek goes smoothly.

A gorilla permit is valid for a single trekking trip. Once purchased, it allows you to participate in one gorilla trek on the specified day and at the designated park.
