Climb Mount Kenya via Naro Moru Route

4 Days | 3 Nights

From $ 631 / person

Your trip overview

The Naro Moru Route is the most popular trail for trekkers on Mount Kenya, and for good reason. This 4-day adventure offers a well-balanced combination of scenic beauty and efficient trekking, making it a favorite among both seasoned hikers and first-time climbers.

What makes this route stand out is the steady ascent via the Sirimon Route, ideal for gradual acclimatization and the swift descent via the Naro Moru Route, allowing for a quicker return through diverse and contrasting landscapes.

Your trek begins with a gentle climb through the sweeping Mackinder’s Valley, surrounded by dramatic peaks and alpine vegetation as you make your way toward Shipton’s Camp. The highlight of the journey is reaching Point Lenana (4,985m), Mount Kenya’s third-highest summit and the ultimate goal for trekkers.

On the descent, you’ll pass through the infamous Vertical Bog, a wet and often muddy section that adds an extra element of adventure, followed by the dense rainforest zones that mark the lower slopes of Mount Kenya.

While the Naro Moru traverse doesn’t cover every feature of this incredible mountain, it offers a scenic, efficient, and rewarding route to the summit, with spectacular views, challenging terrain, and an unforgettable alpine experience from start to finish.

From here, your hiking adventure officially kicks off with an 8 km (5-mile) walk through the lush montane rainforest, home to colobus monkeys, exotic birds, and diverse flora. The trail gradually ascends, offering a cool, shaded path beneath the forest canopy.

By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at Met Station Camp, located at 3,050 meters (10,200 ft). After settling in, enjoy a warm dinner and spend the night in the mountain hut, allowing your body time to begin adjusting to the altitude.

Once past the bog, the trail opens up into the stunning Teleki Valley, named after Hungarian explorer Count Sámuel Teleki. Here, the scenery becomes more dramatic, with breathtaking views of Batian and Nelion peaks, Mount Kenya’s highest summits, towering above the landscape.

The trail climbs steadily over loose scree and rocky terrain, taking approximately 4 hours. Reaching the summit just in time for sunrise, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Mount Kenya’s dramatic landscape, jagged peaks, shimmering glacier fields, hidden tarn lakes, and sweeping valleys below. On clear days, you may even catch glimpses of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

After a moment of celebration and photos at the summit, begin your descent back through Teleki Valley to Met Station. This is a long but scenic descent, passing familiar landscapes now bathed in daylight. You’ll arrive at the hut in time for dinner and a well-earned rest after conquering the mountain.
