Lemosho Route

7 Days | 6 Nights

Your trip overview

The 7-day Lemosho route is preferred over the six-day option as it provides an extra day for acclimatization, specifically by splitting day two into two days, allowing for a more gradual ascent. Additionally, the 8-day Lemosho route itinerary offers even more time for acclimatization, making it the recommended choice over the 6-day variation.

During the seven-day trek, on day two, the journey progresses from Forest Camp to Shira Camp 1, with an elevation gain of 2,000 feet. Then, on day three, the hike continues from Shira Camp 2 to Moir Hut, which is rarely used and situated at an elevation of 13,800 feet. This gradual exposure to higher altitudes aids the body in adapting to the increasing elevations anticipated in the subsequent days.

However, the six-day Lemosho variation remains unchanged in its trek from Barranco to Barafu, followed by the summit day.

The Lemosho Route, although slightly longer and pricier than shorter alternatives, offers a more secluded and serene experience, making it ideal for climbers with limited experience and ample time. Beginning at the Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain, this route presents a less-traveled path compared to others.

As climbers embark on the journey, they traverse picturesque forests and expansive moorlands before reaching the Shira Plateau by the third day. Here, the route converges with the Machame Route at Lava Tower before descending to the Barranco Valley via the Southern Circuit. Along the way, fortunate climbers may encounter wildlife such as buffalo and elephants.

Despite its extended duration, the Lemosho Route provides climbers with a greater opportunity to acclimatize, ultimately increasing the likelihood of a successful summit.

The 8-day Lemosho route itinerary is generally considered better for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro compared to the 7-day route itinerary. The primary reason is that the 8-day itinerary allows for better acclimatization due to the additional day included in the trek. This extra day helps climbers adjust to the altitude more gradually, reducing the risk of altitude-related illnesses and increasing the chances of a successful summit.

The 7-day Lemosho route climb indeed has a good summit success rate of about 85%, while the longer variation of 8 days boasts an even higher summit success rate of 90%. This higher success rate on the longer variation can be attributed to the extra day for acclimatization, which better prepares climbers for the summit attempt, ultimately increasing their chances of reaching the summit successfully. Therefore, opting for the longer variation provides climbers with a higher chance of summiting Kilimanjaro.

Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Hut

At 23:30, you’ll be roused up with a cup of tea and some cookies. Between the Rebman and Ratzel glaciers, we begin our climb to the top. We’ll take a north-westerly route to Stella Point on the crater rim, ascending via thick scree. This is the toughest portion of the journey, both psychologically and physically.

We’ll stop for a short break at Stella Point (5732m) and be rewarded with one of the most spectacular sunrises you’ll ever witness (weather permitting). We will have reached Mount Kilimanjaro’s and Africa’s highest peak, Uhuru Peak (5895m). At these heights, it can get extremely chilly at night, but by the end of the trekking day, it will be rather warm. We descend to the Mweka Hut camp site via Barafu for lunch after reaching the peak.

The rough gravel on the way down to Mweka Camp will necessitate the use of trekking poles (3100m). Later that evening, we’ll have our final meal on the mountain before getting some well-deserved rest.
