Your trip overview

Taking on the four-day Mount Meru trek gives you the advantage of a more gradual descent, which spares your knees and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the spectacular scenery and rich wildlife.

While you can tackle the climb in three days, it’s not recommended due to the physically demanding stretch

from Miriakamba Hut to Socialist Peak and all the way back to Momella Gate in one go, a grueling challenge even for seasoned hikers.

On Day 2, you’ll push higher to Saddle Hut, located at 3,570 meters (11,713 feet). Although you’ll cover just 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), the climb becomes steeper and the effects of altitude may start to kick in. The hike takes around three to five hours, giving you time to adjust to the thinner air.

A short acclimatization hike to Little Meru in the afternoon is highly recommended. At 3,820 meters (12,533 feet), Little Meru offers stunning panoramic views and helps your body prepare for the intense summit push.

Day 3: Saddle Hut - Summit - Miriakamba Hut

Summit Day on Day 3 is the most demanding and rewarding part of the trek. You’ll start your ascent around 2:00 AM, guided by headlamps and the moonlight. The climb to Socialist Peak at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet) will test your endurance, as you’ll cover over 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) and face more than 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) of vertical gain.

The high altitude and steep incline make this a true challenge, but the sunrise views from the peak, with Mount Kilimanjaro towering in the distance, make every step worth it. After reaching the summit, you’ll begin the long descent back to Miriakamba Hut, clocking in around 12 to 15 hours of trekking in total.
